The Anna I. McPherson Lecture 2013 will be given by 2011 physics Nobel laureate Brian P. Schmidt.

The lecture entitled "The Accelerating Universe" will be held in the Leacock Auditorium (room 132 of the Leacock building) at 6pm on January 31st, 2013. This public lecture is for a general audience and admission is free of charge.

Brian P. Schmidt听is a Distinguished Professor and听astrophysicist听at The听Australian National University听Mount Stromlo Observatory听and Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. He is the听co-recipient of the 2011 Physics Nobel prize for his work showing evidence for the accelerating expansion of the universe.

Abstract:听The 听Accelerating 听Universe 听

In 听1998, 听two 听teams 听traced 听back 听the 听expansion 听of 听the 听universe 听over 听billions 听of 听years 听and 听discovered 听 that 听it 听was 听accelerating, 听a 听startling 听discovery 听that 听suggests 听that 听more 听than 听70% 听of 听the 听cosmos 听is 听 contained 听in 听a 听previously 听unknown 听form 听of 听matter, 听called 听Dark 听Energy. 听The 听2011 听Nobel 听Laureate 听for 听 Physics, 听Brian 听Schmidt, 听leader 听of 听the 听High-颅鈥怰edshift 听Supernova 听Search 听Team, 听will 听describe 听this 听 discovery 听and 听explain 听how 听astronomers 听have 听used 听observations 听to 听trace 听our 听universe's 听history 听back 听more 听than 听13 听billion 听years, 听leading 听them 听to 听ponder 听the 听ultimate 听fate 听of 听the 听cosmos.听
