The project consists of the upgrade of the vertical power distribution system. Includes mechanical, electrical, and architectural work.
Construction start date:Â June 2024
Planned construction end date:Â October 2025
Work schedule:Â Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with some nights and weekend work to be coordinated with the Building Director.
Project Manager: Simon Lacoste -Â simon.lacoste [at] mcgill.ca
Assistant Project Manager: Jose Uria -Â jose.uria [at] mcgill.ca
Contact for building users:Â Jose Correa (Building Director)Â -Â jose.a.correa [at] mcgill.ca
Scope of work:
- Renovation of the building’s entire vertical electric distribution (bus ducts)
- Renovation of four (4) electrical rooms
- Replacement of 26 electrical panels
- Installation of redundancy between emergency generators
Impact & mitigation:
Access:
- Traffic in the building may be rerouted at times. A security agent or signage will redirect building users.
- Short closures of some spaces may be needed and will be coordinated with the building director and users.
Noise:
- The work may generate noise at times. The building director and users will be informed of noisier work.
Service shutdowns:
- Multiple minor and major service shutdowns will be needed. These will be coordinated in advance with the building director and the users.
Safety considerations:
- The work planned as part of the project will involve asbestos-containing materials and silica-containing materials. Most of the work likely to disturb these materials is planned in the electrical rooms located on floors 3, 6 and 9, and in the south staircase. All applicable safety measures will be put in place and monitored by an external industrial hygiene consultant. These include dust-containment methods such as setting up enclosures to isolate the work areas and putting the work areas under negative pressure, where required, or using specialized vacuuming equipment.
