Dr. Sasha Luccioni will present "AI and Climate Change: Equating positive impacts with negative effects."
While people often split into polarising views on technology either saving us from climate disaster or contributing to it, the reality is much more nuanced. In this talk, I will explore how the development and use of artificial intelligence affects the environment, from my own research about how to calculate the carbon footprint of algorithms to projects and initiatives that may provide some hope that AI can be used in the battle against the climate crisis.
Dr. Sasha Luccioni is a researcher in ethical and sustainable artificial intelligence at HuggingFace, as well as a Founding Member of Climate Change AI and a Board Member of Women in Machine Learning. Dr. Luccioni's work focuses on having a better understanding of the societal and environmental impacts of AI models, datasets and systems.
This event is also part of the , organized by Dr. Alex Ketchum. Our series was made possible thanks to our sponsors: SSHRC, Digital Citizen Research, the Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF), the DIGS Lab, Milieux, Initiative for Indigenous Futures, ReQEF, and more.
