Professor, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, University of Bergen
Phatic functions – the secret sauce of workplace learning
Dr. Edvin Schei is professor of family medicine and medical education at University of Bergen, Norway. He is the Chair of medical professionalism at his university and continues to work clinically in family medicine.
After graduating in 1984, Dr. Schei found himself ill prepared for the aspects of doctoring that deal with clinical uncertainty and people’s suffering and «non-fixable» problems. Seeking deeper understanding, skills and tools for his clinical work, he has introduced insights from philosophy, psychology and leadership theory into family medicine and undergraduate education, with an emphasis on listening skills, emotional awareness, and practical wisdom. His current research is focused on medical students’ social learning environment during clinical placements.
Dr. Schei has published approximately 50 peer reviewed articles and 6 books, with themes that touch upon human vulnerability, understanding, and flourishing. He was a visiting scholar at the IHSE (Centre for medical education) during the academic year 2016-17.
