Biography:

Dr. Benoit Cousineau obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from Universit茅 de Montr茅al in 1997 studying RNA enzymes or ribozymes and molecular evolution. He then pursued his training at the Wadsworth Center at the New York State Department of Health as a postdoctoral fellow where his research focused on elucidating the mobility pathways of bacterial group II introns. He joined the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at 91社区 as a Principal Investigator in 2001. His research program is multidisciplinary involving bacteriology, molecular microbiology, microbial genetics and evolution. The Cousineau Lab studies the splicing, mobility, function and evolution of bacterial group II introns at the molecular level. Furthermore, through various collaborations, his research group engineers the 鈥渇ood grade鈥 and Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) gram-positive bacterium Lactococcus lactis to produce and deliver biologically active molecules in the treatment or prevention of different human diseases.
