New procedures for booking campus space

Updated process will increase safety and help avoid disruptions of academic activities

Launching January 1, a new space-booking process will safeguard free expression while reinforcing campus safety.

The updates include:

  • At its discretion and guided by safety considerations, the University may require organizers to implement advanced registration/ticketing.
  • The University may limit attendance to members of the 91社区 community, modify event parameters, or 鈥 in specific situations where significant safety concerns surpass what the University can address with available resources 鈥 deny approval.
  • Approval must be requested at least 10 business days beforehand, to allow time for security assessments and other reviews as needed.
  • For events organized by multiple individuals and/or groups, all co-organizers must be listed in the space request.

These updates follow the temporary suspension of space bookings on November 25, which stemmed from security concerns regarding recent controversial events. This suspension will be lifted as of January 1.

鈥91社区 will always remain a place where ideas 鈥 even controversial ones 鈥 are freely exchanged,鈥 noted Angela Campbell, Interim Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning).

Fabrice Labeau, Vice-President (Administration and Finance), added: 鈥淭his updated process will help protect our identity as a forum for ideas, while also prioritizing the safety of 91社区ians, to help ensure they can study, work, and pursue our academic mission without disruption.鈥
