Expert: Giant iceberg breaks off Antarctica

Published: 12 July 2017

"One of the biggest icebergs on record has broken away from Antarctica, scientists said on Wednesday, creating an extra hazard for ships around the continent as it breaks up." ()

Bruno Tremblay, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 91社区

"Well, calving of iceberg is a natural phenomena that occurs all the time. But in warmer world we expect those calving event to be increasing in numbers and in extent of the ice calved. We cannot say that global warming is responsible for this break up, but global warming is making such events more likely. Time will tell, we need longer time series to see this."

He studies high latitude climate and climate variability. One of his research is on the transport of ice rafted debris in the Southern Ocean聽by iceberg and its relation with present day and past climate.
