Expert: International Day of Persons with Disabilities | December 3

Since its proclamation in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly in resolution 47/3, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been celebrated annually on 3 December around the world.聽The observance of the IDPD aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and to mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.聽()

Dana Anaby, Associate Professor, School of Physical and Occupational Therapy

鈥淔or young people who are living with a disability, participation in everyday activities is important to their well-being and sense of belonging; however, it is limited mainly because of environmental barriers that can be physical, social, attitudinal, and institutional. At the ASPIRE Lab, we focus on developing and testing 鈥榬eal life鈥 youth-engaging therapy interventions that build their capacity to remove environmental barriers and to engage in activities that are meaningful for them within their own context, ensuring they lead a good life.鈥

Dana Anaby is an Associate Professor at the School of Physical and Occupational Therapy, Scientist at CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, and Director of the ASPIRE lab (Advancing Strategies for Participation-based Initiatives in REhabilitation). Her research encompasses the participation and well-being of children in everyday life, as well as youth and young adults with physical disabilities, with a focus on leisure participation and the impact of the environment.
