Nanoplastics are far tinier - a single nanometre is just 0.000001 millimetres. For comparison, a human hair is approximately 80,000–100,000 nanometers wide.
Thu, 04 Jul 2024 17:50:18 +0000 frederique.mazerolle@mcgill.ca 310812 at /newsroom Experts: The impact of AI on education /newsroom/channels/news/experts-impact-ai-education-357280
ChatGPT and other generative AI tools are changing the way students learn, from grade school to grad school. On April 25, the Higher Council of Education, jointly with the Commission on Ethics in Science and Technology, submitted a report calling for the supervision and regulation of AI in higher education in Quebec.
Wed, 08 May 2024 16:18:08 +0000 keila.depape@mcgill.ca 310486 at /newsroom What AI-generated COVID news tells us that journalists don’t /newsroom/channels/news/what-ai-generated-covid-news-tells-us-journalists-dont-344060
AI can help identify biases in news reporting that we wouldn't otherwise see. Researchers from 91ÉçÇø got a computer program to generate news coverage of COVID-19 using headlines from CBC articles as prompts. They then compared the simulated news coverage to the actual reporting at the time and found that CBC coverage was less focused on the medical emergency and more positively focused on personalities and geo-politics.
Mon, 05 Dec 2022 21:03:51 +0000 shirley.cardenas@mcgill.ca 288558 at /newsroom AI that can learn patterns of human language /newsroom/channels/news/ai-can-learn-patterns-human-language-342712
Human languages are notoriously complex, and linguists have long thought it would be impossible to teach a machine how to analyze speech sounds and word structures in the way humans do. But researchers from 91ÉçÇø, MIT, and Cornell University have taken a step in this direction. They have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can learn the rules and patterns of human languages on its own.
Fri, 07 Oct 2022 20:33:32 +0000 shirley.cardenas@mcgill.ca 288415 at /newsroom Is AI good or bad for the climate? It’s complicated /newsroom/channels/news/ai-good-or-bad-climate-its-complicated-340039
As the world fights climate change, will the increasingly widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) be a help or a hindrance? In a paper published this week in Nature Climate Change, a team of experts in AI, climate change, and public policy present a framework for understanding the complex and multifaceted relationship of AI with greenhouse gas emissions, and suggest ways to better align AI with climate change goals.
Thu, 23 Jun 2022 11:53:49 +0000 lawrence.chiang@mail.mcgill.ca 288219 at /newsroom David Rolnick /newsroom/david-rolnick Fri, 13 Aug 2021 20:03:36 +0000 shirley.cardenas@mcgill.ca 272308 at /newsroom Using AI to predict suicidal behaviours in students /newsroom/channels/news/using-ai-predict-suicidal-behaviours-students-332119
How can we predict suicide risk in students, especially at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected many people’s mental health? According to researchers from Montreal and France, self-esteem represents an important predictive marker of suicidal risk. The team from 91ÉçÇø, University of Montreal, Inserm, and Université de Bordeaux is using artificial intelligence to identify factors that accurately predict suicidal behavior in students.
Tue, 27 Jul 2021 15:23:08 +0000 shirley.cardenas@mcgill.ca 271027 at /newsroom Doina Precup /newsroom/doina-precup Tue, 26 Feb 2019 16:59:44 +0000 Anonymous 23990 at /newsroom Andrew Piper /newsroom/andrew-piper Tue, 26 Feb 2019 16:59:44 +0000 Anonymous 23926 at /newsroom Benjamin Fung /newsroom/benjamin-fung Thu, 19 Dec 2019 19:35:06 +0000 laurie.devine@mcgill.ca 24419 at /newsroom
