The Montreal Gazette's Josh Freed, will sit down with Dr. Joe Schwarcz, Director of the 91社区 OSS, for an entertaining conversation about how the Office for Science and Society came to be and some of the fun (and challenges) the Office has tackled over the last 25 years. (And of course, in true OSS fashion, there will be some fun demos throughout the evening!)

The Leacock Building can be accessed via the Roddick Gates on Sherbrooke, the gate on McTavish, or through the Milton Gates (University and Milton).

Joe Schwarcz听is Director of the 91社区 Office for Science and Society. He is well known for his informative and entertaining public lectures on topics ranging from the chemistry of love to the science of aging. Dr. Joe has received numerous awards for teaching chemistry and for interpreting science for the public and is the only non-American ever to win the American Chemical Society鈥檚 prestigious Grady-Stack Award for demystifying chemistry. He hosts "The Dr. Joe Show" on Montreal's CJAD and has appeared hundreds of times on The Discovery Channel, CTV, CBC, TV Ontario and Global Television. He is also an amateur conjurer and often spices up his presentations with a little magic. Dr. Joe also writes a newspaper column entitled The Right Chemistry听and has authored a number of books including best-sellers, Radar, Hula Hoops and Playful Pigs, The Genie in the Bottle, The Right Chemistry, An Apple a Day, Is That a Fact?, and Monkeys, Myths, and Molecules. Dr. Joe was awarded the 2010 Montreal Medal, the Canadian Chemical Institute鈥檚 premier prize recognizing lifetime contributions to chemistry in Canada. In 2015 he was named winner of the Balles Prize for critical thinking by the US based Committee for Skeptical Inquiry in recognition of his 2014 book, Is That A Fact? His latest book, Superfoods, Silkworms, and Spandex, hits bookshelves in May 2024 and is right now.听
Josh Freed听is an award-winning filmmaker, writer and nationally-syndicated journalist. who believes he who laughs, lasts.
For his writing, Josh has won two National Newspaper Awards as Best Canadian Columnist for his column in the Montreal Gazette. In film, his 24 one-hour CBC documentaries have been broadcast in over 50 countries, from the US to Europe and Japan. Among them: 鈥淭he Trouble with Experts鈥, a look at fake science. Josh is also the author of 9 books, including Moonwebs; The Anglo Guide to Survival in Quebec; and Fear of Frying, which won the Stephen Leacock Prize for humour. Also in French, 鈥淰ive le Quebec Freed.鈥澨鼿is recent book for children is 鈥淏icycle Bob and the Bike Revolution鈥. In theatre, he鈥檚 written and performed in several plays with Bowser and Blue, and Aislin including last year's 鈥淭he 4 Anglos: Surviving the Covid Apocalypse鈥. He says he is calligraphy-challenged, directionally-disabled and hair-impaired.
