Academic title(s):
Assistant Professor
Department:
Bioengineering
Areas of expertise:
I study structural water and its role in the architecture and mechanical behavior of natural and engineered materials. Structural water is involved in the establishment of pre-stress in natural materials as an evolved toughening strategy, and this mechanism can be implemented in biomimetic materials. As well, I research structure-function relationships in living organisms (animals and plants) and biomineralization (formation of inorganic crystalline and amorphous materials under the control of biological determinants). My lab uses advanced multiscale 3D-imaging methods, and applies deep learning in image processing.
