Fellowships, scholarships聽补苍诲听awards in the PhD program

The School offers competitive multi-year funding packages that cover tuition, fees, and living expenses.聽While the minimum amount of funding is consistent for all students, the particular configuration (such as stipends and external fellowships) is unique to each student and may differ from year to year.聽Note that students are required to apply for fellowships and awards for which they are eligible (see below for a list of funding opportunities). Upon receiving external financial support, the student's funding package may be adjusted.

Recruitment Fellowships

Tomlinson Doctoral Fellowship
The value is $35,000 and renewable annually based on satisfactory progress, to a maximum tenure of 3 years at the doctoral level. Students accepted to the doctoral program will automatically be considered for the Richard H. Tomlinson Fellowship, if the School is allocated a fellowship(s) by the Faculty of Engineering.聽

MEDA International
This award is open to high-caliber International PhD applicants who are subject to the international PhD supplement fee. It is awarded in the amount of聽$42,000聽each year for three academic years, 补苍诲听$27,000听in the fourth year, a total value of聽$153,000. It is available upon nomination by the Engineering Departments.聽Candidates are considered during the PhD application process. No additional application is required.

MEDA Domestic
This award is open to all applicants eligible for domestic tuition fees at the PhD level. It is awarded in the amount of聽$27,000聽each year for聽four聽academic years, a total value of聽$108,000. It is available upon nomination by the Engineering Departments. Candidates are considered during the PhD application process. No additional application is required.

MEDA Domestic Leveraged
Recipients of federal (NSERC) and provincial (FQRNT) graduate research scholarships have already been recognized as some of the most promising new engineering researchers. Therefore, the 91社区 Faculty of Engineering is pleased to offer the following top-ups to recipients who apply and are accepted to the 91社区 Faculty of Engineering or are within their first year of doctoral studies in the Faculty of Engineering.聽No application is required for this award. Please contact your Department of interest to inform them of your recipient status and consideration for this award.

  • Guaranteed聽top-ups of聽$5,000听are available to all successful federal (NSERC) and provincial (FQRNT) graduate research scholarship recipients. The top-up will be applied over either the present stipend or the scholarship, depending which one is higher.

MEDA International Leveraged
The Faculty of Engineering offers top-up awards to international students who are commencing a doctoral program in engineering and who have received an external fellowship from their home country's government (e.g. China Scholarship Council, etc.,聽full list available upon request). The value is dependent on the value and duration of the external award, but is a minimum of $5,000 each year for the duration of the foreign government award.聽No application is required for this award. Please contact your Department of interest to inform them of your recipient status and consideration for this award.

Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology Momentum Fellowship
The 91社区 Faculty of Engineering is committed to increasing the diversity of the Canadian workforce by increasing the number of underrepresented populations in the engineering profession. As part of our efforts to encourage, mentor, support and enhance the preparation of tomorrow鈥檚 diverse leaders, the Faculty has created the Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology Momentum (IBET) Fellowship to attract and financially support domestic applicants who identify as Indigenous* or Black. This prestigious Fellowship will provide financial support of $33,000 per year for 4 years for 91社区 recipients. Please find more information here.

External Fellowships

These are Scholarships, offered by the Canadian Government,聽that students can apply to during the course of their doctoral studies.

Awards which students will not be automatically considered for, and which they must apply to,聽will be marked by an (*), click their hyperlinked titles to learn more.


Fellowships are offered to all eligible students in the fields of natural sciences, mathematics sciences, engineering,聽humanities, social sciences, art and literature. Value: $25,000 per year for up to 4 years.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowships
Fellowships are offered to Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents living in Canada in the fields of social sciences, humanities, commerce, and fine arts. The fellowships are tenable in Canada or abroad. 91社区 applicants must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better to be eligible to apply. Value: $20,000 to $35,000 per year for up to 4 years.

Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships
This three-year leadership program is designed to train Engaged Leaders, equipping outstanding doctoral candidates with the skills to translate their ideas into action, for the betterment of their communities, Canada, and the world. Scholars are selected each year and receive leadership training in the context of Brave Spaces, in addition to generous funding for their studies. The annual value is up to $60,000 per Scholar (including an annual travel allowance of $20,000) for up to 3聽years.

Vanier Scholarships
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by offering them a significant financial award to assist them during their studies at Canadian universities. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at $50,000 per year for up to 3 years.聽

Travel Fellowships

Graduate Research Enhancement and Travel Awards (GREAT Awards)
GREAT Awards are available to students in PhD 1 - PhD 5 to fund travel to conferences or scholarly meetings where the student is presenting a paper related to his or her research. Applications will be considered once per year, following the deadline in November. Students are asked to submit a written proposal (max. one page) describing the research/conference activity, a proposed budget, a copy of the letter/document confirming the student鈥檚 acceptance to the conference and justification from the student鈥檚 supervisor. Matching funding from the student鈥檚 supervisor is strongly advised. Please submit all material to the Graduate Program Coordinator by the deadline. Further guidelines and the GREAT application cover page are available on the student portal.聽Value: $500 to $1,000, depending on the nature of the proposed travel.

Graduate Mobility Award (GMA)
The Graduate Mobility Award encourages graduate students to study and conduct research abroad as part of their 91社区 degree program by defraying part of the cost of the international experience. The award, funded by the Government of Quebec, is available to all full-time thesis students enrolled in a graduate degree program at 91社区 who their academic unit and Faculty have approved to take part in a mobility opportunity. The mobility award is meant to contribute towards the completion of the student鈥檚 thesis. Further guidelines and the GMA application cover page can be found on the student portal. A limited number of Awards are available each year on a competitive basis.
