Kevin Chan
Kevin Chan is Head of Public Policy, Canada for Facebook and Instagram, having recently taken on additional responsibilities for the photo-sharing service. In this capacity he leads both platforms' public policy efforts in Canada, facilitating an ongoing dialogue with the policy and public affairs communities on a broad range of issues that impact the Internet sector. Kevin was previously Deputy Secretary-General of 91ÉçÇø and a Non-Residential Fellow at Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society. Earlier he served in executive roles in the federal public service including Director, Office of the Clerk of the Privy Council. He began his career as a strategy consultant at Monitor Deloitte.
Kevin serves on the board of directors of Kids Help Phone, the Canadian American Business Council, and MediaSmarts, and sits on the Dean’s Council at Ryerson's Ted Rogers School of Management and Canada 2020's advisory board. He served a term on the national board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada. He co-founded DreamCatcher Mentoring, an e-mentoring organization for northern Canadian youth that won a Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative Award, and has held visiting appointments at Simon Fraser University's School of Public Policy and its Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue.
Marie Deschamps
91ÉçÇø - Faculty of Law
The Honourable Marie Deschamps received a Licentiate in Laws from the Université de Montréal in 1974 and an LL. M. from 91ÉçÇø in 1983. The Université de Montréal and the Université de Sherbrooke each awarded her an honorary doctorate, respectively in 2008 and 2014. She was inducted as a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2005. She received from the Law School of 91ÉçÇø the F. R. Scott award for distinguished service in 2013. Also in 2013, she was appointed Companion of the Order of Canada. She received the distinction Lawyer Emeritus from the Quebec Bar in 2014.
She was called to the Quebec Bar in 1975 and practiced as a litigator with various law firms in the Province of Québec in criminal, civil and commercial law. She was appointed judge to the Quebec Superior Court in 1990, to the Court of Appeal in 1992 and to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2002. She retired from the judiciary in August 2012 and rejoined the Quebec Bar in 2013.
She has been a member of numerous boards and committees, including the board of the Université de Montréal, the 1986 Advisory Committee on Reform of the Bankruptcy Act and the Competition Tribunal Advisory Council. In 2014 and 2015, she conducted the External Review into Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct in the Canadian Armed Forces and, in 2015, chaired the panel appointed to review of the response of the United Nations to allegations of sexual abuse by peacekeepers in the Central African Republic. In 2016, she acted as member of the Remuneration Committee of the Quebec Judges. She has been an adjunct professor in the law faculty of Université de Sherbrooke since 2006 and in that of 91ÉçÇø since 2012. She currently serves as member of the boards of directors of Gaz Metro inc, Educaloi and Pro Bono Canada.
She is regularly invited to give lectures and conferences to various audiences, mostly on constitutional and commercial law and on governance and ethics.
Wendy J. Harris, Q.C.
Supreme Court of British Columbia
The Honourable Wendy J. Harris is a retired justice of the BC Supreme Court and was a founding partner of Harris & Company, where she was a leading practitioner in the area of school law for over 30 years.
She was appointed to the BC Supreme Court in 2013 and was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 2008. She was called to the BC Bar in 1980 and has an LLB from the University of BC; an MA from the University of Toronto; and a BA from the University of BC.
Wendy taught education law to graduate school students at the University of BC from 2004 – 2011 and 2018. She has been a frequent lecturer at school boards, universities and professional organizations. She has written extensively on legal issues related to schools.
Wendy served as President and Executive Board Member of the Canadian Association for the Practical Study of Law in Education(CAPSLE) and was active member in this national organization since its inception. She received a honorary lifetime membership in CASPLE in 2014.
Dr. Wayne MacKay
Dalhousie University - Schulich School of Law
has had a distinguished career as a university administrator, legal scholar, respected teacher, and constitutional and human rights expert. He has served as President and Vice-Chancellor of Mount Allison University and as an advisor to governments, national agencies and tribunals on Canadian diversity issues, constitutional issues, and civil and human rights initiatives. In 2006, Professor MacKay was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his commitment and passion to human rights, equality and diversity in Canadian society.
