DOM Awards: Nominations Closed for 2024

Each year, the 91ÉçÇø Department of Medicine honours faculty & residents who have made significant and meaningful contributions in diverse areas, including education, teaching, research, quality and innovation, humanism, mentorship, outreach, leadership, and beyond. You can find a list of our awards below & complete the form located at the bottom of this page to nominate someone.

These awards will be presented at the 91ÉçÇø Department of Medicine’s Annual Awards Soirée on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

List of Awards & Descriptions:

Department of Medicine Early-Career Research Award (<10 years)

This Award Recognizes excellence in research by a Department of Medicine staff member (MD or PhD) who is within 10 years of completion of training. The nominee's research program will be judged on its importance, the impact of the results, the ability to obtain funding, and research productivity.

Nominations should include a letter describing the nominee’s achievements and how the nominee fits the criteria, and an up-to-date CV.

Department of Medicine Mid-Career Research Award (10-20 years)

This award recognizes sustained excellence in research appropriate for the career stage by a Department of Medicine staff member (MD or PhD) who has had a research program for more than 10 years up to 20 years. The nominee's research will be judged on its importance (e.g. landmark paper), the impact of the results, the ability to obtain funding, research mentoring and research productivity.

Nominations should include a letter describing the nominee’s achievements and how the nominee fits the criteria, and an up-to-date CV.

Department of Medicine Senior-Career Research Award (>20 years)

This award recognizes consistent and lasting excellence in research by a Department of Medicine staff member (MD or PhD) who has had a research program for more than 20 years. The nominee's research program will be judged on its importance, the impact of the results, the ability to obtain funding, research mentoring and research productivity and research network/program development.

Nominations should include a letter describing the nominee’s achievements and how the nominee fits the criteria, and an up-to-date CV.

Department of Medicine Clinician-Educator Award

This award recognizes a clinician educator, a ‘physician who applies theory to education practice, engages in education scholarship, and serves as a consultant to other health professionals on education issues.’ Nominees are role model teachers, demonstrate academic achievement in education, mentor learners and colleagues, produce education innovations and scholarship, and have made long-standing contributions to education within the DoM through education leadership.

Nominations should include a letter describing how the nominee fits the criteria, an up-to-date CV, and a teaching dossier (if available).

Department of Medicine Award for Innovation in Quality Improvement or Clinical Care

This award recognizes an individual or team associated with the Department of Medicine that has implemented a clinical program quality improvement program or innovation that has had a positive impact on patients or hospital practice with measurable outcomes.

Nominations should include a brief explanation of the nominee(s) contributions and the outcome, with supporting data.

Department of Medicine Humanism Award

This award recognizes a faculty member or resident who demonstrates humanism and is a compassionate and empathetic physician. They exhibit integrity, professionalism, and high personal standards of behavior. They are committed to the well-being of their patients and advocate for them. They role model these attributes to their students and peers.

Nominations should include a letter describing how the nominee fits the criteria, and a supporting letter from a colleague, student, or patient.

Department of Medicine Outreach Award

This award recognizes attending staff, residents or teams who have enhanced links between the 91ÉçÇø DoM or its hospitals and the community, especially to underserved or minority groups, or who heighten the reputation of the Department and/or hospitals in the greater community, for example by leadership in an outside organization e.g. in the community, global health.

Nominations should include a letter describing how the nominee(s) fits the criteria.

Department of Medicine Leadership Award

This award recognizes a staff member who has shown exemplary leadership within the department. As a leader they provide vision and inspire, communicate effectively, motivate, create a team spirit, and lead by example. They have implemented positive changes within the department.

Nominations should include a letter describing how the nominee fits the criteria.

Department of Medicine Mentor of the Year Award

This award recognizes a DoM faculty member’s excellence in mentoring colleagues or trainees in any career path (education, research, clinical). As a mentor, they have effectively guided one or more mentees in their professional and personal development by being available, trustworthy, compassionate, non-judgmental, and by advocating for the mentee’s best interests. Participation in the formal DoM mentoring program, or the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science Telemachus program is evidence of the candidate’s commitment to and proficiency in mentorship but are not required for nomination.

Nominations should include 2 letters from current or past mentees describing how the nominee fits the criteria. One letter of support must be from within DoM and only can be from a trainee.

Department of Medicine Award for Research by a Subspecialty Resident

This award recognizes a subspecialty trainee who has not completed certification exams in the subspecialty, who has performed clinical or basic research. The research findings should have impact and there should be evidence of dissemination of results, e.g., outstanding project/paper/abstract/presentation at DoM research day.

Nominations should include a letter from the research supervisor or Division Chief and an abstract or paper of the research project.
