Nancy Kang
Muriel Gold Visiting Professor, Fall 2024
University of Manitoba
Nancy Kang is Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Canada Research Chair in Transnational Feminisms and Gender-Based Violence at the University of Manitoba. She co-authored The Once and Future Muse: The Poetry and Poetics of Rhina P. Espaillat (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2018), which won the Honorable Mention for Best Book published between 2017-2020 from the Society for the Study of American Women Writers. Her forthcoming co-edited manuscript is titled Problematic Paradigms: Latina/o Discourses and the Contours of Americanness, part of the University of Texas Press’ Latinx Now! series. Kang’s most recent peer-reviewed scholarship appears in ESC: English Studies in Canada; Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism; Twentieth-Century Literature; and Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies. Recent creative writing has been published in Amerasia Journal, Meridians, The Fiddlehead, and WSQ: Women’s Studies Quarterly. A specialist in comparative ethnic North American literatures, Kang received the University of Manitoba Teaching Excellence Award for the Faculty of Arts (2023-24) and was long-listed for the CBC Poetry Prize (2023).
During her time as Muriel Gold Visiting Professor, Kang will be exploring a facet of her larger Canada Research Chair project which interrogates the complex, charged, often ambivalent connections between outlier individuals and their assumed communities. She will examine strategic representations of enslaved African American and African Canadian women during experiences of migration and flight. Using the Roy States Black History Collection at the 91ÉçÇø Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections, along with other primary materials like slave narratives and fictional reconstructions of enslaved women’s stories, she seeks to amplify and variegate these transnational voices, reevaluating critical perspectives from a woman-of-color feminist lens.
