The Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences conducts a rigorous internal competition to pre-select its nominees for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships competition.
STEP 1 - Registration
Prospective Banting applicants who wish to hold the award at 91ÉçÇø must register their intent to apply. Registration documents include:
- A 500-word abstract of the proposed research program,
- A 500-word summary of the integration of the candidate’s background, the proposed research program, 91ÉçÇø training environment, supervisor(s)’ expertise, and the faculty’s strategic plan, and
- A list of Banting referees with their affiliations and relationship to the applicant, and a justification for the . (It's important toÌýnote that we do not reviewÌýreferees' letters of assessment at this stage, but rather examineÌýthe names of reviewers and their affiliations to the applicants.)

Registration is due on Friday, 24 April 2024, at 11:59 pm EST.

STEP 2 - FULL APPLICATION
A) PREPARATION: Once registered, prospective applicants must complete all application details on but must not submit their application until they receive the letter of endorsement from GPS. The following attachments must also be prepared:
- A 4-page research proposal that follows and clearly communicates to a multidisciplinary review committee
- Fulfillment of degree requirements form (must be signed by the institution that conferred the PhD degree, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree)
- Significance of research contribution (top 3, 1 page)
- Significance of leadership contribution (top 3, 1 page)
- 3 referees-referee contact information and *assessment letters; they will also need to complete their assessments online for the applicant according to the evaluation criteria once the applicant receives 91ÉçÇø endorsement letter and submits their official application on ResearchNet. *Please note that only selected candidates by the faculty review panelÌýwill be asked to provide assessment letters to GPS for final selection. Candidates do not need to include Ìýassessment letters at this stage.

B) Full Application Submission To FMHS via the webform
The full application must be submitted via webform by May 15, 2024, at 11:59 pm
The full application must be inÌýone PDF file containing the completed -but un-submitted- , the 4-page research proposal, bibliography, supervisor's statement, and applicant's CCV.Ìý
FMHS Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will inform all Departments/units the number of full applications to be submitted. This is expected to be one application per candidate.
The department will examine the full application to ensure a successful submission. Successful applications will then be nominated to the Faculty for further review.
C) Faculty Review: After the departmental review, the full applications of the selected applicants will be reviewed by Faculty's Banting review Committee.

*NOTES FOR APPLICANTS
1) The research proposal should be only 4 pages long. It should and clearly communicate to a multidisciplinary review committee. It must include the following elements:
- the objectives of the proposed research program
- the research questions and/or hypotheses
- the theoretical approach or framework
- the position of the proposed research within the context of current knowledge in the field
- the position of the proposed research within the context of ongoing work by the proposed supervisor
- an explanation of the novelty and potential significance of the proposed research
- the methodology (including timelines) and the rationale for choosing it
- the outline of any plans for collaboration
- the role and impact of the applicant’s culture in knowledge production related to the proposed research
- the roles and responsibilities of the applicant, the supervisor and/or other collaborators in the proposed research
- the contribution that the research will make to the advancement of knowledge
- any ethical considerations pertaining to the research
- the plan to disseminate the findings and/or enhance the potential for impact
- the rationale for selecting the proposed host institution and supervisor(s): clearly justify the choice, and highlight the anticipated benefits with respect to the applicant fulfilling their research goals and career aspirations; a discussion of other available options for host institutions should also be included, as appropriate.
2) Referee assessment letters:
- We will notify those who have passed the faculty review and move forward to GPS final selection. Only the selected candidatesÌýshall have the referees forward copies of their letters to us at Gradadmin.med [at] mcgill.ca with a clear subject line listing Banting and applicant nameÌý(date and time will be specified after the faculty review). Please note that 91ÉçÇø GPS and GPS Faculty of Medicine will not provide comments or feedback on your referee assessment letters designed to help you improve your application. We are concerned with the assessment letters that follow along with your application to the agency and those should conform to the Banting guidelines.
3) The full application must be a PDF of the ResearchNet application. Incomplete or incorrect formats will be removed and not submitted.
4) GPS will draft the Institutional Endorsement Letters and send them electronically to nominated applicants in mid-September 2024.
5) It is especially important to review the selection criteria on the – Section: 3.1.3 Review and pre-scoring of applications. This tells you what the national Banting reviewers are looking for.

1) The supervisor's statement is limited to 4 pages - this attachment is part of the full-proposal submission on ResearchNet and should follow the provided by Banting and use the following headings:
- Supervisor's biography,
- Appropriateness of the supervisor(s),
- Research environment,
- Professional development,
- Institutional synergy
2) As ‘fit with the institution’ is a key element in the Banting selection process, the prospective supervisor's support letter should clearly describe the complementarity between the applicant's research program, 91ÉçÇø's and the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences' resources and research priorities.
