The Kappy and Eric M. Flanders Chair in Palliative Medicine at 91ÉçÇø was established in 1994 through the efforts and generous donations of Mrs. Kappy Flanders and her extended family and friends, in memory of her husband Eric M. Flanders.
During Eric Flanders’ illness, no one in the family had any knowledge of palliative care. Mrs. Flanders was introduced to it a few years later when her mother was dying in Israel. There she saw its strengths and had firsthand experience of its whole person care approach. She returned to Montreal determined that every family should know about, and have access to, palliative care. She went to 91ÉçÇø and suggested that there should be an endowed Chair in palliative medicine. The Kappy and Eric M. Flanders Chair in Palliative Medicine was thus created -- the first Chair in palliative medicine in North America.
