The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children's Vision Centre is part of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and the Department of Ophthalmology both at the 91社区 Health Centre. Our mission is to prevent, diagnose, probe, understand, treat and manage all pediatric eye diseases. We provide an exciting teaching atmosphere for medical students, orthoptists, residents, fellows and graduate students. In addition, we have active research laboratories, funded by NIH, CIHR, FFB Canada and FRSQ, where we perform electrophysiological and molecular biological studies to investigate retinal diseases in animals and man. We have particular areas of expertise in eye trauma, uveitis, strabismus, amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, neuroophthalmology, phakomatosis, electrophysiology of the developing and diseased eye and genetic and molecular biology of blindness due to retinal degenerations like Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). We are participating in the first human clinical trial test the safety and efficacy of a new oral retinoid in the treatment of childhood blindness (LCA) due to RPE65 or LRAT mutations. We perform more than 300 surgeries per year and teach eye surgery to residents and fellows. We do a large variety of surgeries including strabismus, tumors, glaucoma, lids, orbit, cataracts and laser.
