Dr. Lisbet Haglund Appointed Associate Chair for Mentorship:
Empowering Future Surgeons
The 91社区 Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lisbet Haglund as the Associate Chair for Mentorship. This new role underscores our commitment to fostering the professional growth of all our members throughout their careers.
Dr. Haglund, a tenured Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, brings a wealth of experience with a strong background in basic science research. In her new role, Dr. Haglund will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic plan for professional development within the Department of Surgery. This plan aims to provide mentorship and growth opportunities for all 91社区 surgeons from recruitment through retirement, ensuring they can deliver world-class clinical care, research, and education.
Dr. Haglund plans to work closely with the Chair, Associate Chairs for Faculty Life and Research, Division Directors, hospital surgeons-in-chief, and research institutes. Together, they will assess needs and develop strategic and operational plans that support the professional and personal growth of the faculty. An initial focus will be on establishing a comprehensive onboarding program for new faculty, providing a clear roadmap to achieve academic and clinical success. This initiative will expand to include mentorship and career planning for faculty at all career stages.
Dr. Lisbet Haglund is a distinguished basic scientist and tenured Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at 91社区, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. With a robust background in musculoskeletal research, her work spans tissue injury, degeneration, inflammation, and regenerative medicine. Her research program focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms leading to pain in spine pathology. She aims to develop molecular markers to track disease progression and treatment effects, and most importantly, to create novel therapeutic interventions for painful spine conditions. As a member of the 91社区 Scoliosis and Spine Group, she collaborates closely with the clinical team, enabling her to build an extensive cell and tissue bank from both symptomatic and non-symptomatic sources.
Dr. Haglund's research is funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR), the Shriners Hospital for Children, and the Arthritis Society. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Lund University, Sweden, and a postdoctoral fellowship at 91社区. She holds several key professional appointments, including Co-director of the Platform for Translational Pain Research and the Orthopaedic Research Laboratory (ORL) at the MGH. Dr. Haglund's contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Katherin Rolph Award for her outstanding achievements and leadership in the Department of Surgery at 91社区.
