Vacation and Leave of Absence Policy (including Parental Leave)

Graduate students and postdocs are entitled to vacation leave equivalent to university holidays and an additional fifteen (15) working days in the year.

91ÉçÇø Leave of Absence Policy

91ÉçÇø Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Leave of absence and Vacation Policy can be found on their website. In order to obtain a paid or unpaid leave of absence, for parenting, illness or health-related family responsibilities under 91ÉçÇø's leave of absence policy, graduate students or postdocs must apply for a leave of absence at www.mcgill.ca/students/records/forms. All documents in support of the request must be remitted to our office who will then either recommend or not that the leave be granted. If recommended, the leave must be officially approved by Enrolment Services. It is important to note that the funded graduate student or postdoc must apply for the leave with the administrator of their fellowship or grant, in accordance with the appropriate award/grant holder's guide.

Parental Leave for Students Paid from Research Grants

The Tri-Agencies will provide maternity/parental leave supplements within 12 months following a child’s birth or adoption to eligible students and who are paid out of agency grants and who are the child’s primary caregivers. The supplement paid to the grant recipient will be based on the students’ and/or postdoctoral fellows’ current salary/stipend from the grant for up to 12 months to cover the leave period. If both parents are supported by grant funds, each parent may take a portion of the leave for a combined maximum of 12 months. The supplement will be pro-rated if the student or postdoctoral fellow is being trained in research on a part-time basis. Please see for further information.

The administering institution is responsible for submitting a request for paid maternity/parental leave supplements to students and postdoctoral fellows by completing the for the relevant agency’s approval.
