Auclair Hospice, Montreal, Quebec.

Hospice Auclair opened in 1896 in the Village of Saint-Jean-Baptiste (today located in the southern part of Plateau Mont-Royal). Built of concrete and cement, it was one of the first truly fireproof buildings in Montreal. It was founded by Father Magloire Auclair, who felt that the Village鈥檚 inhabitants lacked proper care. He petitioned the Bishop of Montreal for permission to construct a hospice. Auclair obtained help to manage the Hospice聽from the Sisters of Providence, who聽soon became聽actively involved in the care of orphans, the mentally ill and the elderly. Their work was so valued that an extension was added in 1930. The building was bought by private developers in 1996 and has since been converted into residential condominiums.
