St. Mary's Hospital, Cote-des-Neiges, Montreal, Canada.
St-Mary鈥檚 Hospital was established by surgeon Dr. Donald Hingston and Sister Helen Morrissey (originally affiliated with the Hospitali猫res de St-Joseph at 贬么迟别濒-顿颈别耻) to serve the Montreal Irish Catholic population. It first admitted patients in 1924 in Shaughnessy House on Dorchester Boulevard (now part of the Canadian Center for Architecture on R茅n茅 L茅vesque Boulevard). However, this building was not designed to function as a hospital and, coupled with internal administrative and financial problems, it was closed in 1929. The current hospital building opened in 1934 in the borough of C么te-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Gr芒ce. In its early years, St Mary鈥檚 was known particularly for its obstetrical service. It expanded with a large nurse鈥檚 residence in 1950, two five-story wings in 1959 and a large West Wing in 1968.
